The Amity Affliction – House of Cards
Amity is a band I grew up listening to throughout high school and then through uni, and they’re from my neck of the woods. You could say they shaped my music taste pretty early on. I’ve been listening to them since at least 2009, they’re definitely in my top bands list.
They’ve had what I’d consider a bit of a stumble with their last album, Not Without My Ghosts, (from the perspective of a very basic modern metalcore fan at least) but House of Cards has been hitting different over the last few weeks. Tracks have been trickling in each week in my new music mix and I’ve finally had the time to sit down and listen to this one front-to-back now that it’s been released in full.
The last album I feel like I enjoyed front to back was Misery, this one feels like a departure from that sound and into something heavier but still reaches for the electronic elements that I think worked well in Misery. There’s a great mix of heavy, punch-me-in-the-chest deathcore across the whole album that I heard with Not Without My Ghosts, but with big helpings of catchy pop and electronic sections that make this very compatible with my midday WFH karaoke sessions.
Overall this is definitely a sick album, it’s going to appear a lot in my gym playlist and I expect the lyrics are going to be embedded in my head for years to come. Listen to the breakdown in Bleed, bloody hell what a track! Buy it on Bandcamp, support Australian music 🤘
